Frequently Asked Questions
What is Low-Stress Investing?
Low-Stress Investing is the name we use to describe Millard & Company's investing approach. It is also the title of a book written by Andrew Millard, our Principal.
Why do you call it “Low-Stress Investing”?
Predicting the direction of the financial markets is a futile, stressful effort. Yet, in their effort to “beat the market,” many investors try to do exactly that. Our approach makes use of what is known about the financial markets; we employ true diversification across multiple asset classes in an effort to earn a realistic return with as little risk as possible. We believe most investors prefer a sense of security over the excitement of the market. If our approach results in financially secure clients who don’t worry about their investments, then we have achieved our objective.
Do I have to sign a long-term commitment?
No. You may terminate our relationship at any time with 30 days’ written notice.
What are the fees and how are they paid?
Like many registered investment advisory firms, we charge a quarterly fee based on the value of your portfolio. It is deducted directly from your account(s). You receive a full accounting of the fee in writing.
Do you hold my assets?
No, we do not accept direct custody of client assets. Most client accounts are held at an outside firm such as TD Ameritrade. You receive monthly statements from Ameritrade in addition to quarterly reports from us.
If I’m transferring an account from another firm, do I need to sell everything first?
No. We usually transfer all assets just as they are held at the old broker. The entire transfer process takes place between the operations departments of TD Ameritrade and the old firm, so there’s no need to contact your old broker.
Will you talk to me before changing my investments?
The Client Agreement grants us discretionary authority to manage your investments on your behalf. We will never change your investment strategy without talking it over with you first. What's more, we communicate with you frequently regarding the management of your portfolio.
What are the ways in which you communicate with clients?
That depends on the methods that work best for the individual client. We call clients periodically, meet with them in person, email back and forth, and use good old fashioned postal mail. In addition, Andy sends out a weekly email update with current Millard & Company news as well as commentary, the week's economic news, and timely articles of interest. Finally, we host frequent client events. Our facility boasts the Depot Room, a perfect venue for a variety of educational and social events.
How hard will it be to get my money out later?
Not hard at all. Depending on how much you need and how your account is invested, we may be able to get money wired to you the same day you request it. In some cases, it may take a few business days.
How often will I get reports?
TD Ameritrade will mail you a monthly statement. In addition, we will send you a quarterly letter and report on your portfolio. You can also have access to your account over the Internet.
How often will we talk about my portfolio?
As often as you wish. Your quarterly report will give you a great deal of information about your portfolio. In addition, Andy will call you periodically to touch base and make any recommendations he may have. He will also want to schedule an occasional in-person portfolio review. And you may call us at any time to discuss any questions or concerns.
Will my personal information be kept confidential?
Yes. It is our policy not to discuss our clients or their business with anyone. We do not sell or share our client list with any outside entities.
